Structures on the Beach

2020 -2021

Among activities innate to children, three involve modifying the environment: digging holes, altering the flow of water and making structures out of whatever is available – rocks, sticks, leafy branches or sand. This series of paintings was based on structures made from driftwood accumulated on beaches. Are they cubbies, destined to be a bonfire or made simply because the building materials were there? They are sculptural and however modest, they are still Structures in a Landscape, an underlying theme of many paintings.
